Visualizing performance on the sail!

SmartSail visually enhances the changes of the surface of the sail on the sail itself to reduce the user’s mental workload and displays the situation (efficiency of force on the sail, such as shivering, when wind force cannot be obtained, which causes a stall) to the spectators watching from long distance.

FEATURES

Smart Sail allows beginners to graduate smoothly

from relying heavily on augmented feedback (the colors or blinking patterns) to attending more to the other visual feedback (e.g., the position of the sails themselves) that real sailors use without altering the focus of their attention.

ON SAIL DISPLAY

Realtime visual feedback of your

acceleration and sail trimming

1

SAIL SENSOR

Measures wind and sail angle to guide you to a better trimming

SMARTPHONE

Track, record and share your activity “LIVE” over the internet

Testing Led Strap display to indcate the speed and acceleration on the sail.

MAIN COMPONENT

July, 2016

The evolution of the main component.

FUTURE

expectation

The current system only indicates the situation using colors and a blinking pattern. We can also consider various blinking patterns or velocities of the light to reproduce the surfaces of the sail (e.g. shadows, flutters, wrinkles, speed, and air pressure) to be known better form the distance.

/ SMART CANVAS

1st considering: Using different materials for the sail such as fabrics that can change appearance (color, transparency, etc.) to allow the changes in sails to be recognized under sunlight.

/ SMART TELLTALE

2rd considering: using highbrightness LED lighting system that can be seen under sunlight such as for public displays.
